There is no doubt that the most prestigious Gold Cup Trial of them all is the King George VI Chase at Kempton Park, the Boxing Day race is a huge renewal in its own right but also gives punters some crucial clues ahead of the Gold Cup. The race at Kempton takes places just under three months before the Gold Cup so is a very popular race with trainers as they look to get a good run into their horses ahead of the Cheltenham Festival. The Gold Cup Odds will be adjusted drastically after the King George so it does have a big affect for the ante post Gold Cup punters.
The King George has been run since 1937 and there have been some legendary winners of the race as well as many who have gone onto win the Gold Cup in the same season, punters are well advised to tune in on Boxing Day to look for those all important Gold Cup clues. Over the history of the King George there is two names that stand out on the roll of honour, they are the great Desert Orchid and Kauto Star who have both won the race a brilliant four times.
The 2011 race will be a huge pointer towards the 2012 Cheltenham Gold Cup with Long Run making his seasonal debut in the race he won so memorably last season. The Nicky Henderson horse went onto win the Gold Cup as well last season so all eyes will be on Kempton on Boxing Day as we look for some younger challengers to emerge.
